09/21/1866 H.G. Wells was born on September 21, 1866 in Bromley, Kent. 01/01/1877 Joseph Wells had an accident that left him with a fractured thigh. The accident effectively put an end to Joseph`s career as a cricketer and his earnings as a shopkeeper were not enough to compensate for the loss forcing him to apprentice his sons. Approx 1880 Wells was apprenticed like his brothers to a draper, spending the years between 1880 and 1883 in Windsor and Southsea 1883 Wells became a teacher-pupil at Midhurst Grammar School 1891 Wells settled in London, married his cousin Isabel and continued his career as a teacher in a correspondence college. 1895 As a novelist Wells made his debut with The Time Machine, a parody of English class division and a satirical warning that human progress is not inevitable 1895 Wells left Isabel for one of his brightest students, Amy Catherine -whom he married. 1896 The Island Of Dr. Moreau 01/01/1897 The Invisible Man 1898 The War of the Worlds 1900 Love And Mr. Lewisham 1901 The First Men On The Moon 1903 Mankind In The Making 1905 A Modern Utopia 1908 The War In The Air 1909 Tono-Bungay and The History Of Mr. Polly 1909 Wells became the first president of the Royal College of Science Association (an organization he helped set up). 1914 At the outbreak of war in 1914, Wells was involved in a love affair with a young journalist, Rebecca West, 26 years his junior. 08/13/1946 Wells died in London on August 13, 1946. |
