02/08/1828 Jules Gabriel Verne was born on February 8, 1828, in Nantes, France to attorney Pierre Verne and his wife Sophie Approx 1835 As a boy, Jules Verne ran off to be a cabin boy on a merchant ship, but he was caught and returned to his parents. 1847 Jules was sent to study law in Paris. 1848 While there, however, his passion for the theatre grew. Later in 1850, Jules Verne`s first plays were published. The Companions of the Marjolaine and Blindman`s Bluff. Approx 1850 His father was outraged when he heard that Jules was not going to continue law, so he disconinued the money he ws giving him to pay for his expenses in paris. Approx 1855 In order to support himself Verne became a stockbroker, a career that did not capture his heart, but gave him financial stability 1857 It was during this period that Verne met and married Honorine Deviane, born Morel, a widow with two daughters. 1861 his son, Michel Jean Pierre Verne, was born. 1863 Five Weeks in a Balloon was published. In the Paris daily Le Figaro a review read, "Is Dr. Fergusson`s journey a reality or is it not? All we can say is that it is bewitching as a novel and as instructive as a book of science. Never have the serious discoveries of celebrated travelers been summed up so well." 1864 Journey to the Center of the Earth 1866 From the Earth to the Moon 1873 Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea 1873 Around the World in Eighty Days 1874 Mysterious Island 1876 Wealthy from popularity of his novels, Jules bought a large yacht and sailed around Europe 1876 Michael Strogoff 03/09/1886 Verne`s nephew, Gaston, fired two shots at the famous author just as he was coming home from his club near his home in Amiens. One bullet missed, but the other entered Verne`s left shin. The wound was slow to heal and would leave him limping for life. It is unclear why Gaston assaulted his uncle, but it appears he was mentally unbalanced. He lived out the rest of his life in an asylum. 1904 Master of the World 1905 The Invasion of the Sea 1905 Jules Verne slipped into a diabetic coma in the spring of 1905, and at the age of 77 died surrounded by his family (In the city of Amines) on March 24, 1905. |
